Some highly sterically hindered organosilicon compounds

The chemistry of organometallic compounds with bulky ligands such as (Me3Si)3C(Tsi) or (Me2PhSI)3C(Tpsi) attached to a variety of metal centres is reviewed. The compounds Tsi2M (M = Zn, Cd, Hg) and the rare two co-ordinate TsiMn show exceptional thermal and hydrolytic stability. The corresponding alkylmetal halides form ring or cage structures. In a range of new boron compounds the structures of TpsiBF(OH) and TpsiB(ti—H)3Li(thf)3 are especially interesting. Each of the three metal—carbon bonds in the Me—SiMe2—C(SiMe3)2—M systems may participate in reactions at the metal centre.

A mild and general iridium-catalyzed, highly enantioselective hydrogenation of sterically hindered N-arylimines with a new H(8)-BINOL-derived phosphine-phosphoramidite ligand has been developed. The present catalytic system features high turnover numbers (up to 100000) and good to perfect enantioselectivities (up to 99% ee) for the hydrogenation of a variety of sterically hindered N-arylimines.

The synthesis of sterically hindered anilines has been a significant challenge in organic chemistry. Here we report a Cu-catalyzed radical addition with in situ-generated nitroso compounds to prepare sterically hindered amines directly from readily available materials. The transformation is conducted at room temperature, uses abundant copper salts, and is tolerant of a range of functional groups.
